If your air conditioner is struggling you may notice higher utility costs. By identifying how your air conditioner is struggling and repairing it you'll ensure your home is nice and cold this summer.

Running All The Time

When your air conditioner is running constantly, it's a major sign that it's struggling. In many cases having an air conditioner that runs constantly is a sign that it's in dire need of maintenance.

However, if your air conditioner has always run frequently, it may be a sign that your air conditioner is too small for your home. Air conditioners have to be purchased to service a certain amount of square footage. If your air conditioner is trying to cool more space than it's rated for, it will start to struggle. If your air conditioner is too small, you should replace it as soon as you're able. Air conditioners that are too small for the space they're attempting to cool will struggle leading to a short life span for the air conditioner and higher utility costs.

Clearing The Drain Lines

One cause of an air conditioner running frequently is that its drain lines have become clogged. Over time, debris like leaves, dirt, and dust accumulate in the lines and impede their flow. To clear a clogged drain line, you can use a shop vac to suck out minor clogs. If the clog is a little tougher to remove, you may need to use a snake to clear a blocked line. To maintain a clear drain line, you can pour boiling water through the drain line twice per year.

Changing The Filter

Having a clogged air conditioner filter is no good. When your air conditioner tries to operate with a clogged air filter, it forces the blower to work much harder than normal. This eventually leads to internal damage around the blower and may make you have to replace your entire air conditioning unit. Thankfully air filters are easy to replace. Just open your air conditioner's air handler cabinet, pop out the old filter and replace. If it's really dusty in the cabinet, wipe it with a dry cloth and vacuum out debris before replacing. You should check your filter monthly if you live in a dusty area or an area with a high pollen count.

When To Ask For Help

If your air conditioner is struggling and you can't diagnose the problem, it's time to talk to a cooling specialist. Ask an air conditioning repair specialist like Doctor Fix-It to come diagnose the problem. Once they diagnose it, you'll have a clear-cut solution to ensure your air conditioner isn't struggling anymore.
