Listen To What Your Furnace Is Trying To Tell You

Blog

Houses can be loud at times and listening to the sounds your house makes can keep you informed on how things are going with such things as your plumbing, electrical and heating and cooling systems. You can learn about the different sounds your furnace may make so you can determine when it's time to call out a professional HVAC technician for a possible problem.

Normal sounds your furnace will make

Your furnace will make some noises normally. When you hear these noses, there is no reason for you to be concerned. These sounds include:

Popping: If you notice a popping sound that sounds like it's coming from the ducts, it is more than likely nothing more than the ducts expanding a bit from the heat making its way through them.

Humming: When it's cold outside and the burners light, it can make a humming noise. If the sound bothers you, reducing the flame a bit can help.

Crackling or sizzling: A crackling or almost sizzling sound when your furnace stops running is the sound of the metal cooling off.

Knocking: A knocking sound is generally nothing more than the sounds the pipes make when they cool down.

Troublesome sounds to hear from your furnace

There are certain sounds you definitely don't want to hear coming from your furnace. If you hear these sounds, then you want to call a technician out to look at the furnace:

Shrieking: A shrieking noise can mean that your furnace has a bearing out; the bearings need to be oiled or there is a faulty belt.

Rattling: If you notice a rattling sound coming from the furnace when it kicks on, then it can also mean a bearing is going out.

Vibration: The sound of a strong vibration can be indicative of a serious problem with the furnace.

Hissing: A hissing sound may mean the furnace has an air leak coming from a service panel. You can see if this is the case by pushing them in to see if the sound goes away.

Thumping: A thumping sound is often the noise heard when a furnace has a worn out belt.

Scraping: An obnoxious scraping sound may mean the blower wheel is loose, the wheel broke or the furnace has a broken motor mount.

By knowing what sounds to look for, you will be able to spot potential problems with your furnace quickly. This will help ensure you keep your furnace running smoothly.
