If you use the wrong chemicals or you push a little too hard, you might end up dealing with damaged pipes or your clogging problem could get worse. Fortunately, you might be able to use this blog to help you to keep your plumbing flowing smoothly.

What Could Be Causing Your Kitchen Drains To Be Clogged

Blog

Do you feel like you are constantly running into a problem where the drain in your kitchen becomes clogged?  If so, it could be caused by behaviors that you are not realizing. Here is what could be causing those common nasty clogs.

The Garbage Disposal

You may have installed a garbage disposal because you love the idea of grinding food waste and putting it down your drain. After all, it keeps the odor out of your trash bags and reduces how much garage you create. However, don't make the mistake of using a garbage disposal as if it's a trash can.

Many people make the mistake of scraping off their entire plate directly into the garbage disposal and letting it do its job. However, the drain is not a good place for some of those foods.  Pasta and rice tend to stick to the inside of pipes, no matter how small of pieces they have been chopped into.  You're better off putting as much food as you can into the trash, and let the garbage disposal grinding up everything else that finds its way down your drain.

There are also some things you should never put down the drain, even if the disposal does a great job at grinding them up. This includes coffee grinds and eggshells.  These things are just not good for your plumbing and will be more likely to cause a clog.

Grease

You may not even think twice about cleaning a pan by hand in your sink after cooking with it. However, having a pan filled with grease can be problematic. All of that grease should be collected into a separate container rather than go directly down your drain.

The problem is some people don't think grease is a big deal. They see it in the pan while it is hot and in a liquid form, and it makes sense to put it down your drain.  Unfortunately, grease tends to solidify when it cools down, which will likely happen in the drain pipe when it is hit with cold water.  Grease can limit the diameter of your drain pipes, and eventually cause them to become clogged.

Not sure why your sink is clogged? It may be time to reach out to a plumbing contractor, such as Brother's Plumbing for assistance. They'll be able to clean out your drain and let you know what is causing the clog in the first place.
